A very rare lead turtle from Aegina
Lot 1146
ISLANDS OFF ATTICA, Aegina. Circa 525-480 BC. 'Stater' (Lead, 28 mm, 7.58 g, 12 h). Sea turtle seen from above, head in profile. Rev. Incuse square of 'Union Jack' pattern with some sections filled. Cf. HGC 6, 430, Meadows Group IIb and SNG Copenhagen 502. Naumann 3 (5 May 2013), 96. Very rare. Some deposits and minor marks, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

Unfortunately, we do not know what these very rare lead turtles were made for. Perhaps they were test strikes, or some kind of emergency money in a time of crisis.
